2024-2025

DOCENTI/PROFESSORS:

  • Michele Botti

The integrated course aims, for the “Structural Modelling” part, to practice with the basics of the numerical modelling by means of a finite element commercial code (MIDAS) in order to be able to dialogue with specialists and become aware of the structural problems of complex buildings. For the  “Numerical Computation” part, the course aims at presenting some mathematical models for Architecture  together with numerical methods required to obtain a numerical simulation of them.

The part of the course called “Structural Modelling in Architecture” asks to the students to realize a numerical structural model of a building, by means of a commercial finite element code, currently MIDAS. Every student can choose an existing or to-be-designed building or even investigate the structural behavior of hypothetical or historical buildings. The aim is to practice with the basics of the numerical modelling in order to be able to dialogue with specialists and become aware of the structural problems of complex buildings.

The part of the course called “Numerical Computation” aims at presenting some mathematical models for Architecture  together with numerical methods required to obtain a numerical simulation of them. In particular, lessons will be devoted to the numerical solutions of numerical linear systems involved in computing equilibrium of trusses, computation of interpolating polynomials  and roots of polynomials, numerical computation of areas and volumes related to outstanding buildings, mathematics behind masonry domes.

In practice the course provides the basic numerical concepts which prepare students to better understand and manage the second part of the course devoted to structural modelling.

The used computer language is mainly MATLAB, but not exclusively.
