The Studio aims to put project practice in a complex and wide framework, by proposing a teaching model that goes beyond traditional specializations to train architects who are both humanists and technicians. The didactic structure of the Studio therefore requires a close link between the different subjects involved, starting from the necessary tight relationship of continuity in the project, which binds together theory, design, constructive idea, and technical elements.
The work carried out during the semester aims to define the architectural project and the relation with the site as part of the urban structure. Starting from this specific point of view, both theoretical and practical, the Studio will deal with a project, in an existing urban context, to be modified, designed, or redesigned.
The didactic activity intends to address the central issues posed by the construction of the contemporary city, deepened through architectural composition tools, in real conditions and contexts, tested and verified through the architectural project in all its components.
In particular:
– issues relating to the definition of the building character will be addressed, with regard to school buildings, public and / or residential buildings, collective buildings, etc., as well as their urban role;
-expressive and figurative architectural issues will be investigated, in relation to typological, technical and construction aspects, regarding the role of composition in its relationships with other disciplines and their contributions.
From the methodological point of view, the project will start from the study of urban composition principles to consequently deepen the design of a single building or group of buildings, the issues related to structural, constructive, and technical choices, to then move forward and consider the relationship with the expressive and formal choices up to the scale of executive detail.
The starting point of this path will be a reflection on the theme and the reasons underlying the design choices: settlement, urban, compositional, typological, spatial, structural, and expressive issues, to be transposed into the forms of architecture.
What? How? and Why? These are the three questions that each student will be required to answer regarding the designed building, its relations with the city and with the history of Architecture, as well as in regard to typological, compositional, and linguistic characteristics and structural and constructive choices.
