Today, working for Built Heritage means facing a great complexity as a result of a continuous stratification process and of an intersection of many different issues. The course aims to provide to the students the necessary knowledge, both theoretical and technical, to act on the existing built heritage, by reflecting on the role of conscious and respectful new intervention.
Taking over the past, and transmit it to the future…
Design for the existing built environment means taking care of this heritage, recognizing it as a resource and acting to promote not only the preservation but also the transformation. This kind of attitude implies to reflect on the role of the new intervention in relation to the existing buildings.
The different modules, Theories of Restoration and Materials in Architecture, that compose the course, intersect two fundamental topics: on the one hand the project for the existing built; on the other hand materials and technologies for an active and preventive preservation. Knowledge, preservation and project are in this way strictly linked, in a mutual and indissoluble relationship, by investigating the most proper methodological and technical tools.
The reflection on specific topics, as for example the central concepts of durability, reversibility, compatibility and recognizability is presented from the double point of view of the two components of the course.
The meeting point for the systematization of the acquired knowledge is represented by a practical exercise that permit to systematize and apply, through a critical reflection on a specific case study, the theoretical contents of the lectures.
